How price, news and chain-state alerts work
Four things you can watch, what each one compares against, which alerts fire once and which keep firing, and why creating one needs a wallet.

Four things you can watch
An alert watches one of four things: a subnet's α price in τ, the TAO price in USD, the news — every indexed item or one subnet's — or the chain state, as a guard on a subnet or on your own wallet.
Reading the Alerts page needs nothing. Creating an alert needs a connected wallet, because an alert is delivered to an address and that address is what your session signs for; it takes one free signature and spends nothing.
Thresholds and percentage moves
A threshold fires when the price crosses a level you set, above or below. A percentage move fires when the price has moved by at least your percentage over your window, measured against Taosis's own price sample from that long ago — the history behind the screener's change columns.
The window must be at least 60 minutes, because that history is sampled roughly hourly. A TAO/USD alert is held back if the external feed is more than an hour stale, rather than fired on a stale number. Both kinds fire once: the alert moves from Active to Triggered and does not re-arm itself.
Guards fire on transitions
A subnet guard watches structural events, not a price: deregistration or a new registration, entering the front of the queue, emission cut or restored, an owner change or take raise, a scheduled child-key change, a takeover lock crossing half of and then all of the ownership bar, immunity expiring. A wallet guard warns when a swap of your own coldkey is announced on chain, days before it executes.
A guard fires on the transition, not the level: not every hour a subnet sits at #1, but when it arrives there. Guards and news alerts keep firing on every match; a news alert only covers items published after it was created.
Where the notification goes
Every alert that fires lands in the in-app inbox on the Alerts page, which is free. Email delivery of the same notifications is the paid part, bought once in TAO, at the price shown on the page.
An alert compares against what the rest of the site shows — the α price read from the pool, the price history behind the change columns, the news items the indexer stored. Nothing fires on a number the site would refuse to display.
