In AI video processing, what looks good to a machine and what looks good to the human eye can be very different things. At Vidaio, we’re building a decentralized video processing subnet on the Bittensor network, where miners use AI to enhance videos and validators assess perceptual quality to reward the best performers. But to make that process fair, trustless, and robust, we need an incentive mechanism rooted in perceptual quality, essentially how it looks to the human eye.. Here, we break down how Vidaio measures video quality using a mix of full-reference and no-reference metrics, including VMAF, PieAPP, and CLIP-IQA, and how this architecture shapes rewards, incentives, and fairness in Subnet 85. Full-Reference vs No-Reference Metrics Before diving into the metrics themselves, it’s important to distinguish two types of evaluation: Full-Reference (FR): Compares the enhanced output to a known high-quality original (the “ground truth”). Used for synthetic jobs: validator-created benchmarking tasks. No-Reference (NR): Evaluates the enhanced output without access to the original high-res version. Used for organic jobs: uploaded by real users through the Vidaio frontend. This distinction is fundamental to the Vidaio subnet: the job origin determines the metric pipeline. VMAF: The Industry Standard (Full-Reference) VMAF (Video Multimethod Assessment Fusion) was developed by Netflix and remains the gold standard in perceptual video evaluation. It uses a fusion of metrics, including SSIM, detail loss, and temporal fidelity, and is processed through a machine learning model trained on human opinion scores.
