Let’s talk about pixels

i At Vidaio, we like to say we make every pixel count. But what does that really mean? Let’s zoom right in on the tiny squares that decide how your video looks, how much it costs to move around the internet, and whether people stick around to watch. A pixel is the smallest dot your screen can address. Pile up millions of them and you’ve got a frame; stack frames every second and you’ve got video. Resolution tells you how many pixels live in each frame (3840×2160 4K, works out to about 8.3 million), frame rate says how often those frames update, and bitrate is the data budget per second you give the encoder to describe everything that’s changing. Same resolution does not guarantee the same quality, two 1080p streams can look wildly different if one gets half the bits. Inside each pixel there are a couple of ways to think about colour. Screens speak RGB, red, green and blue, subpixels lighting up at different intensities to make any colour you can imagine. Video compression prefers YCbCr (often called YUV), where we split each pixel into brightness (Y) and colour components (Cb and Cr). The human eye is fussy about brightness edges and surprisingly relaxed about fine colour detail, so we keep brightness sharp and store colour a little more cheaply. That’s why chroma subsampling exists: in 4:4:4 you keep the lot, in 4:2:2 you drop some horizontal colour detail, and in 4:2:0 you drop a bit both ways. Most streaming uses 4:2:0 because it looks the same most of the time while saving a lot of bits. When we “talk” to pixels, compression is where the real negotiation happens. Codecs like H.264, HEVC, AV1 and VVC hunt for patterns and remove redundancy. Push too hard and the picture pushes back: those little squares you sometimes see (blocking), the stripes in a smooth sunset (banding), the fizz around subtitles (mosquito noise), or that shimmer as scenes breathe (temporal flicker).
