Unpopular opinion: A subnet's most important metric isn't its token price. It's what it actually produces.
I think Bittensor has one of the most interesting ideas in crypto. But there's a question I keep coming back to. If a subnet's token disappeared tomorrow, would the technology still be valuable? If the answer is yes, that's interesting. If the answer is no, what exactly are we investing in? Look at some of the areas where decentralized AI could potentially create value: Model training and inference. Robotics and Physical AI. Scientific research. AI evaluation and benchmarking. Data generation and verification. The token can create incentives, but incentives alone don't guarantee useful technology. A network could attract hundreds of miners while producing outputs nobody outside the ecosystem actually needs. On the other hand, a relatively small research subnet could develop genuinely useful technology with commercial applications. I'm particularly interested in the potential of decentralized competition for robot learning. Imagine independent researchers competing to improve how robots learn unfamiliar tasks, with their performance measured under reproducible evaluation conditions. If those improvements eventually make physical robots more useful, the network has created something meaningful beyond speculation. Of course, this requires evaluation that can't easily be gamed, meaningful contributor incentives, and a path toward real users. If you were evaluating a subnet for long-term potential, which metric would matter most? Revenue from external customers Measurable improvement in AI capabilities Quality of the incentive mechanism Developer and miner participation Token economics and liquidity I'm curious how people separate promising AI infrastructure from short-term token speculation. submitted by /u/Robotensor [link] [comments]
