About 70% of land plant species run on a deal with #fungi in the soil: carbon from the plant, nutrients from the fungus, through threads a few thousandths of a millimetre wide. The group of Toby Kiers (@KiersToby) at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and SPUN (@spununderground) pooled 322 studies and 16,669 soil cores from nine of the world's fourteen biomes. With colleagues at AMOLF, they built a robot that photographed fungus growing in Petri dishes every two hours, and measured the width of 300,000 threads from the images. Their estimate for the top 15 cm of the world's soil: about 110 quadrillion kilometres of living fungal thread. Roughly 300 million tonnes of carbon. About 50 times the length of every fine root on Earth. The densest networks are in grasslands, which hold about 40% of the total. Every year plants push about a billion tonnes of carbon into the soil through these threads. This is the first estimate of how much pipe that carbon runs through. The estimates are based on a model, built on available samples. The authors say where it is weakest (deserts and tundra) and what it leaves out entirely: everything below 15 cm.
